Hair loss is a widespread issue affecting a significant portion of the population. According to HairDAO, 66% of men will experience noticeable hair loss before the age of 35, and half of all women will face hair loss in their lifetimes.
Despite the prevalence of this condition, the development of new treatments has been slow, with no new drugs brought to market since Finasteride in 19971.
The funding landscape for hair loss research is surprisingly limited. Only 0.03% of all early-stage R&D funding is allocated to hair loss research, amounting to a mere $5.4 million per year.
This stark contrast between the widespread nature of the problem and the limited resources dedicated to solving it highlights a significant gap in the market. HairDAO aims to address this disparity by creating an open-source R&D network that brings together patients and researchers to collaboratively develop innovative treatments for hair loss.
